Triangle ArtWorks Partners With City of Durham to Offer Public Art Program in 2022

We are very excited to announce a partnership with the City of Durham to provide a free, 6-week workshop on building a career in public art. This workshop, entitled Making Your Own Career With Public Art, will help artists to develop professional support materials such as CVs and letters of interest; discuss pertinent financial skills, including budgeting and cost evaluations; and illuminate the best practices in pursuing and navigating public art projects. The workshop is part of the City of Durham’s Momentum 360 program and is led by Durham-based artist David Wilson.

Making Your Own Career With Public Art
January 12 – February 16, 2022

Application Deadline: December 15, 2021 (participants will be informed by December 20, 2021.)

Open to artists who live or work in Durham County, NC.

The impetus of this workshop grew out of the COVID shut down last year as residents of Durham and other municipalities rediscovered the importance of outdoor areas and public spaces for both recreation and discourse. Seeking to socialize in the open air, our population turned more attention than ever to murals, publicly-sited sculptures, and other forms of public-facing art. Triangle ArtWorks saw the need to support the next generation of place-making artists. Working over the last 18 months with artist David Wilson, we created a curriculum that provides the skills and knowledge for artists seeking to move their work from the personal scale to the public scale. The City of Durham saw this need as well and partnered with us to cover the financial costs of making this workshop happen. As a result, we were able to lower the entry fee for participants to $0. Andre Pettigrew, Director at Durham’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, echos our dedication, stating: “We recognize that Durham’s arts and culture are inextricably linked to our brand and economy; they are as essential as any other flourishing industry such as technology or manufacturing... Programs like Making Your Own Career With Public Art ensure that Durham’s own art entrepreneurs can become the ‘big names’ for public art contracts in both the municipal and corporate sectors.”Making Your Own Career With Public Art will be held from January 12 – February 16, 2022, via six online classes, each lasting two hours. Course applications are due December 15, 2021, and selected participants will be informed by December 20, 2021. The course is free for artists who live or work in Durham County, North Carolina.
