Resources
Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University– The Center for Documentary Studies works to promote, educate, and foster a culture of documentary making and appreciation. They also organize the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival as well as other programs through out the year. Website
North Carolina Film Office– The NC Film office works to promote North Carolina as a destination for filmmakers by highlighting incentives and benefits and the varied locations of the state. Website. The NC Film Office maintains an online, searchable directory of film crew and production services. If you are in these fields, it is a good idea to be on this Directory. Website.
North Carolina Writer’s Network – The North Carolina Writers’ Network offers an ongoing critiquing and editing service for its members. Through this program, Network writers have the opportunity to open a dialogue about their work, including screenplays, with established writers and editors of varying backgrounds and areas of expertise. Southern Documentary Fund– The Southern Documentary Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Durham. Since 2002 they have been supporting documentary makers across different media making work in and about the American South. The SDF supports documentary makers with advice and counsel, as well as acting as a fiscal sponsor to help receive funds. Every Spring SDF holds its Annual Artists Convening, where filmmakers from around the South and beyond are invited for a weekend of enlightening workshops, panels, and pitch sessions, combined with a healthy dose of community building and peer networking. Triangle Regional Film Commission– The Triangle Regional Film Commission works to promote the 13 county area as a desirable place for filmmakers. They act as a liaison between production companies and locations to get filmmakers to the Triangle. Website.

Myriad Media Gear Rentals – Myriad Media has a selection of cameras, lenses, monitors, lighting and support items for rent on a daily or weekly basis. They will even bring the gear to you for an extra fee. Website
Film Organizations
A/V Geeks– A collection of 23,000 vintage educational films on 16mm. Many, if not all, are very rare and can be seen few other places. A/V Geeks preserves the uniquity of these decades-old educational films and screens them often. Website.
Screenline– A Raleigh-based screenwriting group, Screenline welcomes writers of all experience levels. They meet monthly in Raleigh to discuss and critique screenplays. Website.
Triangle Filmmaking Community Group – Triangle Film Community is a collective of passionate individuals who create and distribute independent films. We seek to foster ‘collaboration, not competition‘ and provide resources to help local filmmakers work together, support one another and celebrate our individual successes. Website. Facebook.

Our first feature film was screened at various theaters and distributed on multiple video-on-demand platforms. Carrboro Film Festival– The long-running Carrboro Film Festival screens a variety of short films annually. The festival is held at the Carrboro Century Center in the heart of downtown Carrboro and is marked by their Kay Kyser awards. Website.
Full Frame Documentary Film Festival –This annual festival, called the premier documentary film festival in the US by the New York Times, features documentary filmmakers from around the world and focuses on creating a space for filmmakers and film lovers alike to enjoy and discuss the art of documentaries. Full Frame is a program of Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies. Website.
Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival – Immigration has shaped the US and remains the most central commonality all Americans share – in essence, we are all rooted in immigrant or refugee beginnings. Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival is a celebration of immigration and refugee stories through films and music videos. This film festival, in its second year, is a collaboration between International Focus, U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants – North Carolina and VerveFilms based out of Central North Carolina. The film festival takes place in September/October time frame. Website.
North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival– International in scope, NCGLFF focuses on films highlighting and celebrating LGBTQ life. The festival screens short and feature length films as well as documentaries at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Website.
Nevermore Film Festival– Screening new horror films that run the gamut from gory to suspenseful, the Nevermore Film Festival has been going strong for over a decade at the Carolina Theatre. Website.
Strange Beauty Film Festival – A 3-day exhibition of short films featuring “the strangely beautiful and the beautifully strange”. Held at Manbites Dog Theater in Durham. Website.
Film Series
Cinema Overdrive– Cinema Overdrive is a monthly series at the Colony Theatre in Raleigh that shows the best and brightest in cult and exploitation films on original 33mm. The series also features great trailer packages and posters made for each screening. Website.
Raleigh Underground – Monthly screenings of indie, cult, & experimental films from the 1950’s-1990’s. Previews by contemporary NC filmmakers & video artists. Facebook.
The Cinema, Inc.– Raleigh’s longest running film series and a dedicated non-profit, The Cinema, Inc. brings classic films to the Rialto in Raleigh monthly. Tickets are sold by the season and their line up is quite impressive. Website,
Retrofantasma– Retrofantasma is a monthly series of classic horror movies. Showing films as diverse as Dune and Chopping Mall Retrofantasma is bringing films you can’t catch anywhere else around. Monthly at Durham’s Carolina Theatre. Website.
Screen/Society– Screen/Society is part of Duke’s Arts of the Moving Image Program that promotes “challenging and thought-provoking work” through local screenings. They organize the series Summer Days, Nasher Nights and Right! Camera! Action! Both in Durham. Website.
