Peel Gallery Coming to Carrboro

A new gallery and community space is in the works for Carrboro with a projected opening date (fingers crossed!) for December. Owner and Director of Peel is Lindsay Metiver, a photographer, educator, independent curator, and gallerist based in Carrboro. But Lindsay is quick to add that “the space is coming into existence with community support, donations, and encouragement.” Learn more about how to get involved with Peel here. Peel will be located at 708 W. Rosemary Street.

Peel will be an art gallery, community event space, digital photography lab, and retail space promoting contemporary art. Lindsay adds that Peel will be “dedicated to supporting the work of emerging, mid-career, and under-recognized artists through diverse and unique educational programming and offer development opportunities for emerging and student artists and curators, especially PoC, to increase representation and access to resources, grants, press, collectors, fellowships, internships, and mentorship. We intend to work to serve and represent the whole community through an emphasis on including works by artists marginalized as a result of their sexuality, ethnicity, gender, disability, class-status, formal educational level, or immigration status.” Peel will stream their art talks, lectures, and screenings via the gallery’s website “for accessibility and a wider reach of eyes and ears.”

Peel plans to go beyond the model of traditional exhibition space, to offer a curated selection of local art, photography, jewelry, books, comics, and zines, in addition to monthly gallery exhibitions. After gallery hours, the space will host workshops, lectures, concerts, film screenings, and music performances.” There will also be space for photographers to make, scan, and print their own work.

Peel is now accepting submissions from both artists and curators. Exhibition proposals and retail submissions should be sent to their email. To find out about calls for artists and curators, get on their email list or follow Peel on social media. They will have periodic calls for group exhibitions as well!
